For the next two weeks, we're pulling apart our Sweet & Smooth Blend and giving you the chance to try each of the two coffees on their own as single origins. Both will be roasted using the exact same roast profile, allowing you to isolate the differences that come from where each coffee was grown.
Mexico brings the brighter side of Sweet & Smooth. It's sweet and crisp with a lighter character that gives the blend its lift.
Guatemala is the foundation of Sweet & Smooth. It's rich and full, bringing the body and depth that anchors the blend.
Our blends weren't created by simply mixing coffees together. Developing them meant testing how different coffees interacted with one another, adjusting their proportions, and then developing a roast profile around each combination. Even within the roast itself, small changes in heat, timing, development, and airflow can change which characteristics are emphasized or muted.
For these two releases, we're taking that process apart. We'll roast each coffee individually using the exact same roast profile, giving you a chance to experience how differently the two coffees respond to the same treatment.
These coffees are grown less than 200 miles apart. In coffee terms, they're remarkably close geographically. Yet differences in microclimate, rainfall, elevation, soil, and other growing conditions can still produce distinctly different cups.
These two coffees are blended specifically to create more complexity and depth in the cup. Mexico Chiapas is the firework. It's sweet, bright and exciting. On its own, though, it's a little thinner and quicker to disappear. It gives you that initial pop of flavor, then fades relatively quickly. Guatemala Huehuetenango is the foundation underneath it. It doesn't have quite the same immediate pop, but it's much fuller and more lingering. It gives the coffee body and carries the experience long after you swallow.
Put them together and you get both. The Mexico brings the excitement up front, while the Guatemala gives it somewhere to land and keeps those flavors around. That's a big part of what creates the complexity and depth we were looking for in Sweet & Smooth.
After experiencing each origin individually, we hope you'll come back to the blend with a new appreciation for what you're tasting and why these two coffees belong together.
